The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps Project

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps Project was a staircase beautification project in one of San Francisco’s residential neighborhood. Over 300 community members, including children, parents, and the elderly, assisted with creating a mosaic running up the risers of the 163 steps located at 16th Avenue and Moraga. Under the leadership of artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher, community members helped create 163 mosaic panels that were applied to the step risers.

In addition to the artists and community volunteer groups, many local organizations offered their services to contribute to this community building effort. Contributors included architects, general contractors, the San Francisco Department of Public Works, and local foundations. Many of these volunteers and sponsor’s names currently appear in images of animals, birds and fish imbedded within the mosaic.

The project was fiscally sponsored by the San Francisco Parks Trust.
